Robert De Niro’s 2nd Stab at Dining in Tribeca
By Natasha Dorsainvil

When it comes to Italian restaurants in New York City’s Tribeca neighborhood, Robert De Niro is heeding the advice, “when at first you don’t succeed, try again.”
Ranked as one of our Haute 100 New Yorkers, De Niro has just opened Locanda Verde in his Greenwich Hotel. Though the Italian gastrospot is really a do-over of his unsuccessful attempt with Ago. This re-done and re-named version overflows with natural light that is balanced by well-finished dark leather, wood, and brick details. Think of a radiating pub.
With the lessons learned from his first go ‘round, De Niro’s new spot is filled with all the accoutrements needed for restaurant success. First, there’s the buzz. The grapevine has sprouted many times over in anticipation of this unveiling. And, unlike with Ago, Locanda Verde’s old-world menu is affordable with dishes running between $18 and $25. Add to that the culinary talents of Andrew Carmellini, the design savvy of Ken Friedman, plus the sweetness that pastry chef Karen Demasco will bring to tables and De Niro’s Italian restaurant do-over may just get the praise he’s hoping for.
