We still don’t know how much Donald Trump is worth. What we do know, however, is that we cannot use the m-word. Millions, that is. In a New Jersey lawsuit that some may tsk-tsk at, Mr. Trump, who makes his mark on our Haute 100 NY list, is suing Timothy O’Brian who authored a book that cited a deflated, million dollar figure back in 2005. In support of Mr. Trump’s point, downplaying the real-estate tycoon’s net worth could have a negative effect on his business image. After all, who wants to be associated with a blowfish?
In a 2007 deposition, Mr. Trump did admit that his value has an inherent ebb and flow to it. When the markets are good, he does great. Conversely, when things slow down, he feels it, but not too much. He still maintains that although the markets have taken a beating recently, he still has “a lot of cash right now”.
As with all court cases, new admissions and details have surfaced about the mogul’s wallet size and ownership claims. In the same 2007 deposition, Trump told lawyers that he often overestimates his publicized worth with “mental projections”. As for property, Mr. Trump doesn’t exclude licensing agreements and limited partnership interests as a “form of ownership”.
Whether it’s millions or billions, you have to admit that anyone can have trouble keeping all those decimals in check. The fact that the man’s net worth depends on factors that are always in flux makes the matter even murkier. So, is this the epitome of making a mountain out of a mole hill? Perhaps. But if Mr. O’Brian could write about it, Mr. Trump can sue him for it.
