Ian Schrager is Going for Six Stars
By Stephanie Wilson

The Burj al Dubai touts itself as a seven-star hotel (although the actual distinction doesn’t exist in the hospitality world). During the coverage of the Olympics in Beijing last summer, the world got a glimpse of yet another hotel claiming more stars than is actually possible. Soon, New Yorkers will too be able to claim a few more stars than possible.
Boutique hotel god Ian Schrager has announced plans to convert the office building at 1414 Avenue of the Americas into a six-star hotel property. Schrager worked out a deal for the conversion with Norman Sturner, who owns the building (and will retain ownership). The Post reports that because of expiring leases, the building will be virtually empty by 2010, when $100 million in development work could start.
The 1923-era, 18-story building on the southeast corner of 58th Street has great views of Central Park. It was built as a hotel and its penthouse roof deck is where the rock group Kiss held parties.
