Schwarzman’s Scaled Down Birthday Bash
By Kris A. Moore

Not everyone is feeling the sting of the global recession, but at least some are choosing to be less ostentatious with their displays. Philanthropist and Blackstone Group chairman and cofounder Steve Schwarzman scaled back his birthday bash from the extravagant show he hosted in 2007. His previous soiree, held at the Armory, cost upwards of $3 million and included a performance by Rod Stewart and mentions in all the gossip columns. This year the executive treated employees of his company to cake in the boardroom where they held a brief roast of the executive. The theme of this year’s party décor was still meant to stroke Schwarzman’s ego though, as the party invitations were showcased on giant flat-screen TV’s along with a map of Schwarzman’s sky miles during the course of the last year, with “cute little pictures of private planes.”
